Northwest Federal Credit Union recently provided a free storage and distribution space for Helping Hungry Kids (HHK) of Northern Virginia, a beneficiary and DBA of CORE Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

HHK provides food to local elementary school children who would otherwise go hungry on weekends and during school breaks. For more than ten years, they have provided children with food packs containing enough food for two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and snacks. HHK donates more than 13,000 food packs each school year to students at elementary schools in the Northern Virginia area.

Recently, HHK’s founders reached out to community leaders in search of a space they could use to expand their organization. Since the onset of COVID-19, they have been operating out of a trailer in a driveway and were looking for a larger, air-conditioned, safe space to sort and package meals, allowing them to increase efficiency and engage more volunteers.

Dogwood Elementary, one of the schools that receives supplies from HHK, reached out to its longtime partner, the NWFCU Foundation, the credit union’s charitable arm. The Northwest Federal team responded quickly, offering 1,500 square feet of vacant space in a Northwest Federal-owned building in Reston, VA, conveniently located for loading and unloading donations.

“When Helping Hungry Kids expressed a need that would enable them to better serve local children, we were excited to provide a space for them at no charge,” said Jeff Bentley, President and CEO of Northwest Federal. “With all the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, we want to do everything possible to make sure children in our community don’t go hungry."
